Dr. Smith was the Director of the Allergy and Immunology Residency Training Program at Emory University School of Medicine. He has served on the Editorial Boards of both of the major allergy society journals. Dr. Smith has been included in Best Doctors in America since 1994 and has been named a Texas Super Doctor since 2003. He has received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a member of the Expert Panel for Allergy for the Texas Medical Board,

Dr. Smith and his wife have 3 children, all of whom live in Austin. To him, it is a blessing having his family in Austin with him. He teaches middle and high school Sunday school. He serves as Health Supervisor and member of the Enterprise Risk Management Committee of the Capital Area Council and is the Chartered Organization Representative to the Boy Scout troop sponsored by his church. He is an amateur photographer and master scuba diver.

He is certain that diseases do not have patients, rather, patients have diseases. Patients are his first priority.

His approach to patient care is called evidence-based medicine. His care for each of his patients is supplemented as best possible with all available knowledge from the scientific literature, so that best practices can be determined and offered. Decisions and policies should be based on evidence, not just the beliefs of practitioners, experts, or administrators.
